Learning patience & compassion in England

We are amongst many happy people in England at the NKT Summer Festival. Tho, for us Atlantans, it feels more like a Georgia winter. In any case, we are having a wonderful time.

We have so far received amazing teachings from our Teacher, Geshe Kelsang Gyatso, and have had the opportunity to meditate deeply on them. It's been really transformative. I cherish this time to retreat.

We have a 'free' day tomorrow and will be meeting with our friend Kate who lives in London who just happens to be visiting the area. Looks like the weather will be dry and maybe some sun.

After that, an entire week of really rare teachings on Highest Yoga Tantra, the quick path to enlightenment. Cannot wait. There are about 1000 more people coming in the few days. It's getting really crowded already. When we are not walking or meditating we are waiting in a 'queue'! It's a great way to practice patience and cherishing others. It's absolutely wonderful to oppose our anger and frustration. This whole place is a training ground.

Anyway, sending lots of love to our friends and family back in the States. Love you!!!

Buddhist Festival in England??? What is this thing Angie & Elin do?

I use this blog mainly to focus on music since I’m a DJ, but I’m also a practicing Buddhist. I really find Buddhism helps me maintain a level of calm, peace and happiness behind the decks and in all aspects of my life.

I practice in the New Kadampa lineage and every year we have 3 major International Festivals where there are teachings, meditation, retreat and just general festival life. Geshe Kelsang Gyatso, a renowned teacher and scholar, has led these International Festivals and will be officially retiring this year. His teachings are amazingly clear, precise and profound. I’ve met no other teacher that can be so light-hearted and yet so direct and powerful simultaneously. It’s truly amazing to receive teachings from him.

So many of our friends and family hear about our spiritual travels every year, but what is a Buddhist Festival anyway???? I’ve included this little photo gallery for you to get an idea.

The Summer Festival, held in Ulverston, England about 2 hrs north of Manchester, has been happening for over 20 years now and has grown every year. This year, we expect 5000 people from all over the world. Ulverston is in the Lake District, part of the beautiful, English countryside:

For 2 weeks, we thousands of Buddhists turn the Festival grounds into a small village:

  • The site is home to an old English Priory, which has been completely restored to its original stature.
  • The Buddhist temple was built is on the land and is gorgeous. You can see pictures of it above. The shrine is amazing. The largest Buddha statue is over 8 feet tall!
  • People come from all over the world, and since the teachings are in English there are translators for many different languages (German, Russian, Portugese, Spanish, Mandarin, etc.).
  • There is a tent village, where thousands of folks make their home during these 2 weeks. Camping isn’t the only option, but it is the cheapest option. Some folks stay in B&Bs in Ulverston and nearby towns.
  • The entire Festival is run by volunteers! Everyone is encouraged to help out in some way, whether to serve food, get water, or clean the temple between sessions. Our core group of Atlantans will be Crowd Marshalls this year. Watch out, Brits! Here we come!
  • General Festival life includes receiving profound and amazing teachings, reviewing teachings over a great cup of French-pressed coffee (from a cafĂ© run by the French Sangha), lots of meditation, late-night crepes, late-night veggie burgers with ‘chips’, walks along the shore, long walks with dear friends, etc...

It’s truly a blissful and peaceful time. Every year, my wish for everyone to have this experience of peace grows deeper and deeper. I feel so fortunate to have this opportunity and just wish everyone else could, too.

Can’t wait to share photos and stories with you all when we return. Perhaps we will check-in a bit during the Festival as well.

It's a Yeah Yeah Yeahs Kind of Day

I’m a huge fan of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. I was just searching the web to see if they announced a Fall Tour, yet. Alas, all I see are dates in the UK for December. But there’s a big gap from Aug to Dec, so hopefully they will be coming down to Atlanta in the Fall.
The last time they came to Atlanta, in Oct 2006, I saw them at the Tabernacle. The show was amazing. Definitely in my Top 10 live shows of all time. Karen O is a supreme performer, with the likes of David Bowie and Freddie Mercury. Seriously.

She is my rock super-hero. She came out that night with a full-body spandex suit, a cape, and a mask!

Here are some great videos from that show. (Thanks to Oshimbo for posting all these videos) If you’ve never seen them live, you will want to after watching these. The energy was amazing in the Tabernacle that night.

The vocals on the video are a little hard to hear at times...

Tick & Date With the Night
They asked the crowd to take a vote on which song they should play, Tick or Date with the Night. Tick is one of my favorite YYY songs. It’s RAW as hell and very sexy. But Date with the Night is also a great song. Great driving guitar in DWTN. So they were very close. They ended up playing both. I like a group that aims to please!

Y Control
About 2 mins into this Karen O’s likeness to Freddie Mercury is showcased. They have very similar stage posturing.
“I wish I could buy back the woman you stole!”

Phenomena
Encore with masks...she is a Phenomenon!

Musical Inspiration: Felix Da Housecat

Felix Da Housecat has been one of my favorite DJs and Producers. Since Kitten and Thee Glitz and

He's still rockin' it and pushing the envelope of house music, electro, rock, everything! I aspire to rock a crowd like he does, as you can see from this Tea in the Park video:

As I once hailed from the Midwest, he hails from Chicago and has all the attitude and bravado of to show for it. And just like me, he now calls Atlanta home. He'll be spinning at MJQ on Saturday, August 22nd. I'm already blocking the date off my calendar!
