My Top 10 Albums of 2009 - Inspired by the Remix

My favorite albums of 2009 happen to be albums which inspired some of my favorite remixes this year. Typically, I downloaded the remix of a track or several tracks and finally gave in and bought the album. For these 10, I'm so very happy that I did get the whole album. The test for me is whether the album can actually do well as a whole piece, rather than just a few choice tracks (which are remixed). All of these albums are great on their own, through and through.

1. Miike Snow - Miike Snow
Earlier this year, I downloaded the Treasure Fingers remix of Animal and loved it. Then came Burial remixed by DJ Mehdi and finally, Black and Blue remixed by Savage Skulls. Finally (duh!) I bought the album. It's amazing. This is the type of album will grow and grow with you. I fell in love from the minute I heard it and continue to fall in love on each listen. The remixes are great and so are the originals. I can't get enough of Miike Snow. Even though this group joined on a whim, I hope they continue to make lots and lots of music together.

2. Kid Cudi - Man on the Moon
This is not your typical hip hop artist or album. Kid Cudi brings a huge amount of depth to his first album, as though he's done this before. Clearly, he's been a musician for a long time. Heady themes of hope and dreams, nightmares and fears and the close proximity of both pervade this album. Plus the beats just simply rock. It's quote enjoyable. The remixes of Day n Night by Crookers and Make Her Say by Afrojack are some of my favorite this year and probably most played in my sets. I just love Cudi! I reviewed his album in more depth a few months back. Read it here.

3. Yeah Yeah Yeahs - It's Blitz!
The YYYs are one of my all-time favorite bands. And while this is not my favorite YYY album, there are definitely quite a few tracks on here will stand the test of time for them. I think they do best when they stick to their tried and true formula of Karen's chilling and raw vocals, heavy guitars and banging drums. Dull Life is definitely one of my favorites for this reason. Everyone tried to remix Zero and Heads Will Roll this year. But hardly anyone could even approach the originals. I think A-Trak's treatment (there he is again on my list) of Heads Will Roll is the best. Everyone else failed at remixing them this year.

4. Metric - Fantasies
This album is the first I had heard of Metric, but apparently they had a released an album years back. Their first in awhile, this seems to be their resurgence. What a great album. You can't help but sing along with Emily's vocals and want to scream out her passionate lyrics. They often remind me of Garbage, when Garbage was at their best. Love the production on this album!

5. Kid Sister - Ultraviolet
Chicago's best female rapper and I would even say, one of the best since MC Lyte. She's got the rhymes. A-Trak produced the record. Laying down some amazing beats with old-school drum kits. This is a really fun record and has inspired some of the year's best remixes as well. I think one of my favorites on there is Step which features Estelle singing a badass chorus throughout. Kid Sister has mad talent for rappin'. I can't wait to hear what else she does.

6. Phoenix - Wolfang Amadeus Phoenix
Prior to this year, I had only heard Phoenix on the Lost in Translation soundtrack (Too Young). Then this year came remixes of 1901, Lisztomania, and Fences. Had to get this album. All those songs in their original form are great, but the rest of the album is fantastic too. Love Like a Sunset Part I and Part II are great examples of their depth. I like this more and more and more. I think I'll need to go back to their earlier albums and catch up!

7. The xx - xx
The xx remix their own music actually and that's how I first heard them. They created an extended remix of Night Time, which just blew me away when I heard it. The moody synths, guitar and Romy's hypnotic voice create an amazing sound. The album is good. Very moody and a little emo. You might have to be in the right mood for it. But it satisfies in those moments. I hope they come back to Atlanta, because the 529 sold out way too fast.

8. N.A.S.A. - The Spirit of the Apollo
North America South America is a production team that come to the game with a helluva record full of your favorite artists. David Byrne singing behind the rhymes of Jurassic 5's Chali 2na and Blackalicious' Gift of Gab!!! Hell yeah! And Gifted, a collaboration between Kanye West, Lykki Li & Santogold. This is also one of my favorite remixed tracks of the year. This whole album is amazing. Influences from all over the world. KRS-One, Method Man, The Cool Kids and DJ AM before he passed. So many stars on this one. It shines!!!!

9. Just a Band - 82
Really great electronic band from Kenya that make house, electro, ambient, funk...even a little hip hop. Having released some dance EPs in the past few years, 82 is an album that shows their musical reach. I can't wait to hear more of what they bring in the years to come.

10. Amanda Blank - I Love You
It's been a great few years for female rappers and creative lyricists. From M.I.A. and Santogold, come Amanda Blank and Kid Sister. Blank is a little poppy at times, but overall she delivers some really fresh lyrics and a great sound. Again, the remixes of Shame on Me and I Might Like You Better are fantastic.

Deep Thoughts : a deep house mixtape

I've put together a little deep house mix for ya. I've gone way back to my roots on this one. While some of you know me as a hard-hitting electro DJ, I have a softer side as well. Take a listen. I think you'll enjoy this as a warm-up for your day or your night. And post some comments, let me know what you think.

What kind of music do you expect to hear when you go to a dance club?

Martin Solveig - C'est magnifique

Boys & Girls (Laidback Luke Remix) by Martin Solveig Feat Dragonette   (13242 KB)
Listen on posterous

You must check out one of my favorite producers right nowWith his truly rocking dance music, pieced together from actual instruments and disco samples, Martin Solveig creates unique music that is at once a throwback and at the same time all-too-perfect for what people need right now. Tracks like Rocking Music and Give it to Me contain the longing vocals of Martin himself. You can't help but want to sing along while dancing late into the night.
Pairing with Dragonette in the Boys & Girls above, he plays around with ideas of gender. Plenty of remixes of this song to play it at the height of a club night. My personal fave is Laidback Luke's remix. Listen to it below.

Enjoy!!!

Lupe Fiasco raps over Radiohead in latest mixtape

New Tryst Music: Tegan, Sara, Tiesto, and Just a Band

Tegan & Sara have a new album out called, Sainthood. I've only just listened to it, but I can definitely see liking this a lot. Their sound is maturing, of course, as these girls mature. Paste describes the new album:
"Their sixth studio album seamlessly entwines the exuberance of Cyndi Lauper with compressed pop-punk chords, synthy new-wave and Euro-techno. The arrangements are consistently dynamic and clear, but Tegan & Sara’s wordy vocals steal the show"

They are always such a delight to listen to. I'm sure upon a few more listens, I'll have a review of my own to post here. They are coming to Atlanta in February. I'll definitely be getting tickets to that soon.

These girls also did a bit of trans-Atlantic collaboration with Tiesto, the trance superstar. While I'm not a big fan of trance music, Tiesto is a great producer and I cannot ignore this collaboration. I think T&S' collaboration actually made Tiesto's sound a bit more refined. He didn't have to overdue the moody synths or ambience because their vocals have such emotion. Feel it in my bones (hear it below) is such a treat.

Another great album that just came out recently is by Just a Band. JaB is a band that creates funky house, disco, and electronica music. They are from Kenya and intertwine Kenyan lyrics and rhythms with the traditional dance and electronica sound. They are wonderful. Check out their new album 82 on iTunes. You'll definitely enjoy it.

Tryst, my monthly DJ gig at Bellissima is this Friday and I will definitely be playing these tunes! Stop by to hear dance and enjoy this beautiful music.

Serato Scratch or Traktor Scratch Pro?

Help me decide. Please. I'm debating between purchasing Serato Scratch or Traktor Scratch Pro. There are Pros and Cons to each, but would love your help in deciding. Both can allow me to use my CDJs with time controlled CDs. Traktor seems to have a lot more bells and whistles, including a lot more on-board effects. But Serato is more ubiquitous, especially in the States. Which just means it's easier when you're working with other DJs in most clubs these days.

Would love your thoughts via the comments below or email me.

Another Tryst Video, DJ Angie Terrell

Another video from Tryst last night. Fun with EQs and effects (delay). And a little jiggy by yours truly.

Tryst Video - Oct. 16 2009

I had an amazing time DJing Tryst last night. It was a great crowd and a great vibe. The DJ alone cannot produce a great night or great vibe. We're just one factor in many that contribute. But we try to sense the mood and the attitude of the crowd and use that to take them on all sorts of different journeys through the night. As you can see from these videos that I'm going to post I was having a great time pulling out some tunes for the crowd to get them dancing.

Unfortunately, it was too dark in the club for any of the video that was taken of the crowd. The Flip doesn't have a light, so my camera-woman (the lovely, Elin) had to work with what she had.

Dance the Way I Feel - Ou Est Le Swimming Pool

Ou Est Le Swimming Pool, apart from having a great name, are hailed as UK's Passion Pit. This song is catchy as hell and really fun to dance to!

Armand Van Helden, who I blogged about yesterday, remixed this song and I'm gonna play it at Tryst on Friday night! Don't miss it!!!

Trax for Tryst - Duck Sauce aNYway

Two of my favorite DJs/Producers have teamed up to create some bangin' new, old-school, disco-inspired tracks. Duck Sauce are A-Trak (former DMC champion and electro hip-hop house head) and legendary NYC DJ & Producer, Armand Van Helden. Their album was supposed to come out this week and I had hoped to bang out a few of the tracks for Tryst, this Friday October 16th

If you don't know already, Tryst is a monthly night I do over at Bellissima in Midtown Atlanta. I rock out some of the best house, disco, and electro (bmore, bangin', etc.) hits you can hear in this city.

Alas, the release of the nu disco, club anthems is delayed until the end of the month (just in time for Halloween & Pride, here in Atlanta). However, I do have one track off of the forthcoming album that I'm gonna play for you all. Let's just say, you'll feel all NAAAASTY just dancing to it. And I've got loads of other great tracks to pull out from A-Trak and Armand, individually.

p.s. if you know the exact date that the album drops, please hit me up through Comments or email me.

Until the end of the month....enjoy the new video by Duck Sauce:

Dreams & Nightmares, My Review of Kid Cudi's "Man On The Moon"

Most albums these days are not meant to be listened to in a progression. Download 1 or 2 of the songs on iTunes or off the web, and they have to be able to stand alone. But this album is really best listened to in a progression. Spend some time from the beginning to the middle to the end.

The beginning of the album starts out as a pretty typical, young rapper's album. Rhyming about the comfort of California "trees" and p*ssy. About Cleveland, his home town, about territory. It's pretty typical and pretty boring.

But then Solo Dolo(Nightmare) hits. And it's a delightful surprise of maturity from the Kid. The slow tempo, calculated rhythm and lilting melody "Why must it feel so wrong, when I try to do right?" The underlying ringing bell synths. This is where the album starts to open up and take on exciting curiosity.

The piano loop, synths and the "No"s and "Yeah"s of Heart of a Lion express an angst of a growing, young rapper. No wonder the sub-title for the song is "Kid Cudi Theme Music". It's evocative and interesting. As a listener, I want to delve into the heart of this lion. I want to understand the deeper meaning contained within it. This is what makes the album progressively more interesting. I could do without the first few songs.

Throughout the rest of the album, Kid Cudi introduces the listener to the darkness of his deep vocal rhymes (he has a relatively deep voice compared to some of his peers) and the darkness of themes. It's not an accident that many of the songs contain the sub-title "Nightmare". It's not the darkness of "the streets" that Lupe Fiasco rhymes about. It's the darkness of dreams. They can be hopeful, they can help us feel alive ("Everytime the moon shines, I become alive"), but they can very quickly change into nightmare, into death. In this way, the themes that Kid Cudi rhymes about are beyond his 25 years. This is where the magic happens.

But don't worry, there's plenty to lighten the mood. "Make Her Say" uses samples from Lady GaGa's "Poker Face" to add a little sexual humor that works. It's could be crude and crass, but it definitely is humorous and you can't help but sing along with the sample that we know so well. (A song I didn't really like much until I heard as a sample in this song.)

The collaboration with MGMT on "Pursuit of Happiness (Nightmare)" is badass. It's simple piano and rhythm is hypnotic. It's playful, like a kid in a sandbox, but he's rhyming about themes we all ponder as we grow up, as we get older; "Dreaming, dreaming, tell me what you know about dreams....about the night terrors...". I couldn't think of a better collaboration between Kid's deep vocals and MGMT's light melodies. It's a great pairing. And indicative of the sound and future of hip hop and electronic music, in general. The lines are blurring and Kid Cudi's right there in that dream-like space. "Up Up & Away" is really an indie song, not even hip hop as most know it. I can see Death Cab's Ben Gibbard singing this song. He's on the moon and many of us are still boarding the spaceship.

Overall, this album is as enjoyable as a dream and as evocative as a nightmare. And like some of the best albums, I think I'll still be listening to it years from now.

In B Flat! Amazing Musical Collaboration

This is an amazing site that combines YouTube videos of separate musical sounds all in B flat. The site let's you create a your own combination of musical instruments, sounds and samples to create a unique musical experience by playing some or all of the YouTube videos simultaneously. And it all works musically.
  • Select a few and play til the end
  • Play more at any time and keep it going
  • Adjust the volume of any video to create a more layered effect

Do yourself a favor and play around with this. Enjoy!

Get Your Disco: Hump This! Tryst Mini-Mix

House music has many parents and siblings: soul, funk, jazz, disco, hip hop (hip house). But disco and hip hop are probably the biggest influences in the house that music I like the most. For this installment of the Tryst mini-mix, this entire mix is influenced by disco. Perhaps later this week I'll post a mini-mix inspired by hip hop. For now, this mix is entirely inspired by disco. Enjoy!

Tuesday's Tryst Mini-Mix

A bit more of a moody mix for you on this cloudy, Atlanta day. The first track by, Gui Boratto - No Turning Back - is probably one of my favorite tracks of 2009. It just never gets old. Love the hard synths at the beginning that give it it's techno sound. And the guitar riff and beats complement the sweet, sweet vocals so well, which are provided by his wife, Luciana Villanova. Enjoy!

How Amanda Blank factors into the Tryst List

I'm working on what I call "The Tryst List", the equivalent of pulling records, for September's Tryst. Tryst is coming up in less than 2 weeks and there are some gems out there I can't wait to break out for y'all.

Friday, Sept 18th 10:30PM-2:30AM
Bellissima Lounge
560-B Amsterdam Ave
Atlanta, GA

Amanda Blank's hittin' hot, bootylicious, crunk, down and dirty album, I Love You, dropped in August. It's been on steady rotation for me since. Like her musical sisters, MIASantigold and Rye Rye Amanda Blank delivers a fast-paced rhyme against some bangin' beats. And like her sisters, doesn't necessarily conform to any one genre. She spans hip hop, nu wave, baltimore club and booty house. She delivers some catchy rhymes and rhythms. Santigold is featured on, A Love Song, which really reminds me of some MC Lyte.

Here is a great song from the album. If you like it, go out and get some (meaning - buy it, yo)!!! I hope to drop some Blank on you Sept 18th , as well as many other hott tracks that will get you Trystin' with your honey(s).

Felix Da Housecat & P Diddy Collaboration : LECTRO BLACK

This is an amazing mixtape. P Diddy rhyming on top of Felix’s dirty electro synths and beats. Hi hats and lots of synth stabs. Great collaboration. This mixtape should be listened to by everyone who is a fan of electro, Felix, P Diddy and just good dance music in general.

Well, I did it! I signed up for Clear Wimax

I just signed up for Clear WiMAX service here in Atlanta. They are having a deal to get both the Home and Mobile service bundled together. I’m fed up with DSL and really don’t want to deal with Comcast. I’m gonna give it a go. Will keep you all posted on the quality of service and download times, etc. It’s gotta be better than what I got now.
